Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 16, 2026

MateFi LLC (“MateFi,” “we,” “us,” “our”) provides a personal finance budgeting experience through our website, mobile application, and related services (collectively, the “Services”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information about you.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies when you visit our website, create an account, connect financial accounts, use budgeting/analytics/subscription features, or interact with our support and AI features.

This Policy does not apply to third-party websites or services that you access through the Services (for example, your bank’s website or third-party integrations). Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies.

2. Information We Collect

We collect information in three ways: (a) you provide it, (b) we receive it from third parties you choose to connect, and (c) we collect it automatically.

A. Information you provide

  • Account information: name, email, password, profile preferences.
  • User content: budgets, categories, goals, notes, labels, and other content you input.
  • Support/communications: messages you send us (support tickets, emails, surveys, feedback).
  • AI interactions: text you submit to our in-app chatbot and the outputs it provides.

B. Information from connected financial accounts

If you choose to connect a financial account through a connectivity provider (such as Plaid), we may receive information like:

  • account type (checking/savings/credit), institution name, and account-level metadata;
  • balances;
  • transaction data (merchant/description, amount, date, category, and related metadata);
  • recurring transaction indicators (to support subscription management).

Note: When you connect accounts, your bank login credentials are generally entered into the connectivity provider’s flow, not into MateFi. What we receive depends on your permissions, your institution, and the products you enable.

C. Subscription and billing information

If you purchase a paid plan, payments may be processed by a payment processor (such as Stripe). We may receive limited billing information (e.g., subscription status, plan type, renewal dates, and last four digits where applicable), but we do not need to store full payment card details to operate subscriptions.

D. Information collected automatically

If you choose to connect a financial account through a connectivity provider (such as Plaid), we may receive information like:

  • Device and usage data: IP address, device type, operating system, app version, screens/pages viewed, actions taken, timestamps, referral URLs.
  • Cookies and similar technologies (website): we may use cookies, SDKs, pixels, and similar tools for core site functionality and analytics (including Google Analytics). We may also use marketing/advertising cookies if enabled in the future (see Section 6).

Note: When you connect accounts, your bank login credentials are generally entered into the connectivity provider’s flow, not into MateFi. What we receive depends on your permissions, your institution, and the products you enable.

3. How We Use Information

We use information to:

  • Provide the Services (budgets, analytics, goals, subscription tracking, insights).
  • Connect and maintain linked accounts and keep data updated (if you enable this).
  • Personalize your experience (categories, insights, notifications, preferences).
  • Operate AI features (respond to your requests, summarize spending, explain trends, answer budgeting questions).
  • Process subscriptions and prevent fraud/abuse.
  • Communicate with you about updates, security notices, and support.
  • Improve and develop our Services (debugging, testing, analytics, product research).
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.

4. AI and Machine Learning (Important)

MateFi may offer features that use AI or machine learning, including a chatbot.

  • What we process: your prompts and related context you choose to provide (for example, budgeting questions or categories).
  • How we use it: to generate responses and provide the AI feature.
  • Improvement/training: we may use AI interactions and related data to improve our AI systems and Service quality. Where feasible, we aim to use de-identified, aggregated, or minimized data. If we use Personal Information for model improvement/training, we will do so consistent with applicable law and will provide required notices/choices.

Tip: Avoid sharing sensitive info in chatbot messages if you don’t want it used to support or improve the feature.

5. How We Disclose Information

We do not sell your linked financial account and transaction data for money.

We may disclose information in the following circumstances:

A. Service providers and processors

We share information with vendors that help us operate the Services, such as providers for:

  • financial account connectivity (e.g., Plaid),
  • payments/subscriptions (e.g., Stripe),
  • hosting and infrastructure (e.g., AWS),
  • analytics and performance monitoring (e.g., Google Analytics),
  • customer support tooling, security, and fraud prevention.

These providers are authorized to process information only as needed to provide services to us under contractual obligations.

B. With your direction

We disclose information when you request or direct us to do so (e.g., exporting your data).

C. Legal, safety, and compliance

We may disclose information to comply with law or legal process, respond to lawful requests, protect rights/safety, investigate fraud or abuse, or enforce our agreements.

D. Business transfers

If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

E. Aggregated / de-identified information

We may disclose aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you.

6. Cookies, Analytics, and Advertising Choices

We use cookies and similar technologies for:

  • essential functions (security, login, preferences),
  • analytics (understanding usage and improving performance),
  • marketing/advertising (only if enabled in the future).

Your choices:

  • You can control cookies via your browser/device settings.
  • If we use advertising cookies/targeted ads, we will provide opt-out mechanisms as required by law, and we will honor legally required
  • opt-out signals (such as Global Privacy Control) where applicable.

7. Data Retention

We retain Personal Information for as long as reasonably necessary to:

  • provide the Services,
  • comply with legal/accounting requirements,
  • resolve disputes and enforce agreements.

Retention depends on the type of data. If you request deletion, we will delete or de-identify information unless we must keep it for legitimate business or legal reasons.

8. Security

We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live (including the United States and Canada), you may have rights to:

  • request access to Personal Information,
    request deletion (subject to exceptions),
  • request a opt out of certain uses (such as targeted advertising where applicable).

10. Cross-Border Processing (U.S. and Canada)

We may process and store information in the United States and other locations where we or our service providers operate. If you are in Canada, your information may be processed outside your province/territory, including in the United States, where different data protection rules may apply.

11. Children’s Privacy

The Services are not intended for children under 13. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you should use the Services only with permission of a parent/guardian. Certain features (like connecting financial accounts) may require you to be 18+ depending on your institution and applicable law.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. If changes are material, we will provide notice through the Services or by other appropriate means. The “Effective Date” will reflect the latest version.
